Renting a car in Rwanda: what to know before you book

Renting a car in Rwanda is simpler than most visitors expect. The roads are good, the distances are short, and a small company can deliver the car to the airport door. These are the questions we answer most often before a booking.

What documents do you need?

For self-drive: a driving licence held for two or more years, in English or French. An international driving permit is useful but not required with a licence in either language. Bring your passport for the rental agreement. We put the insurance certificate, the regional "yellow card" and the vehicle inspection certificate in the glovebox before delivery, and you keep them in the car.

If you hire a car with a driver-guide, none of this applies to you — we only need your itinerary, the number of travellers and bags.

How much is the deposit, and when do you pay?

Thirty percent of the quote holds the vehicle and lets us buy park permits the same day. The balance is settled at handover by card, mobile money or bank transfer — no payment is taken online through the website. Self-drive hires carry a refundable $500 deposit against the insurance excess, returned when the car comes back as it left.

What is included in the daily rate?

Comprehensive insurance, roadside support, unlimited kilometres inside Rwanda and a full tank at handover. Fuel on the road is yours. A driver-guide adds $35 a day, which covers their meals and lodging. Park fees, permits and lodges are quoted separately and listed line by line on the written quote.

How does delivery work?

We deliver and collect anywhere in Rwanda at no charge: Kigali International Airport, your hotel, or as far as Karongi and Rubavu on Lake Kivu. Handover takes about fifteen minutes — a walk around the car, the paperwork, the SIM and offline maps — and the car leaves with a full tank.

Which car should you choose?

• Kigali, Lake Kivu and the tarmac routes: a Toyota RAV4 or Corolla.
• Volcanoes and Nyungwe: a Land Cruiser Prado for the murram trailhead and lodge roads.
• Families with bags: a seven-seat Fortuner.
• Akagera game drives: the pop-top Safari Land Cruiser with a driver-guide.

When should you book?

Cars are usually available at short notice. Gorilla permits and park lodges are not — they sell out first in the dry seasons, roughly June to September and December to February. Book the car, permits and lodges together as soon as your dates are fixed so everything sits on one quote.

Can you cross the border?

Yes, into Uganda or Tanzania with cross-border papers arranged in advance for a small fee. Tell us the route when you book so the insurance and documents are in order.

What happens if something goes wrong on the road?

Call or WhatsApp the office — we answer from 6am to 10pm every day. Roadside support is included, and we get a replacement vehicle to you if the car cannot continue.
