Self-drive or driver-guide? How to choose in Rwanda

When people ask whether to self-drive or take a driver-guide, the honest answer is: it depends on the roads you want to do and how much you want to think about them. Both options come with the same cars; the difference is who is behind the wheel.

When self-drive is the right call

Self-drive suits confident drivers who want to set their own pace — couples in a RAV4 doing Kigali, Lake Kivu and the northern parks on tarmac, or anyone who likes to stop at every viewpoint. Rwanda's main roads are good, the signage is clear and the distances are short. We deliver the car with a full tank, a local SIM and offline maps, and we are on the phone from 6am to 10pm if anything comes up.

Self-drive works well for: Kigali, Lake Kivu, Volcanoes (with a 4x4), Nyungwe for confident drivers, and the road south through Nyanza and Huye.

When a driver-guide earns their keep

A driver-guide earns their keep the moment you leave the main roads — reading the murram, knowing which track floods, and turning three hours of navigation into three hours of looking out of the window. They also know the gate procedures, the animal movements and the language, and they take the 5am starts off your plate.

We recommend a driver for: Akagera game drives (our safari Land Cruiser comes with one), first-time visitors doing a multi-park circuit, anyone with limited time, and the rainy months.

What it costs

A driver-guide adds $35 a day to any car, and that covers their meals and lodging on the road — you do not arrange or pay for their room. Everything else in the rental stays the same: insurance, unlimited kilometres in-country and free delivery.

The mixed option

Many clients do both: a driver-guide for the parks, then self-drive for a few slow days on Lake Kivu. Tell us the itinerary and we will suggest where each makes sense.
