Do you need a 4x4 in Rwanda?

Not everywhere. Here is where the tarmac ends, which roads turn to mud, and which vehicle we would take for each route and season.
Not for Kigali, Lake Kivu or the main roads between towns — those are tarmac, and a RAV4 is enough. You do want a 4x4 for the murram roads to the trailheads in Volcanoes and Nyungwe, for the tracks inside Akagera, and for any park visit in the rainy months (March to May, October to November). A Prado covers almost every itinerary; Akagera game drives are best in a pop-top safari Land Cruiser with a driver-guide.
Visitors ask this more than any other question, and the honest answer depends on where you are going and when.
Where you do not need a 4x4
Rwanda's main roads are tarmac and well kept. Kigali to Musanze, to Rubavu, to Karongi, to Huye and on to the edge of Nyungwe are all paved. Inside Kigali the roads are excellent. For a city stay, a Lake Kivu road trip or the road south to the King's Palace and the Ethnographic Museum, a RAV4 or a Corolla is comfortable and cheaper to run.
Where you do
The tarmac ends at the park gates. The last stretch to each gorilla trailhead in Volcanoes is murram that turns to mud after rain; the lodge tracks in Nyungwe flood; and Akagera is explored entirely on graded dirt tracks. On all of these a higher, heavier 4x4 keeps you moving and keeps the trip relaxed.
Does the season matter?
Yes. In the long rains (March to May) and the short rains (October to November) we recommend a 4x4 for any park visit and for the full Lake Kivu shore road between Rubavu and Karongi, which has rough stretches. In the dry seasons a RAV4 handles the shore road, but the park approaches still favour a 4x4.
Which 4x4 for which trip?
- Land Cruiser Prado — the default Rwanda car: diesel, automatic, roof rack, comfortable on tarmac and unbothered by mud. Most clients doing Volcanoes or Nyungwe take one.
- Toyota Fortuner — seven seats and 4x4 for families heading to the parks.
- Hilux double cab — for field work and project vehicles.
- Safari Land Cruiser (pop-top) — for Akagera game drives, with a driver-guide, a cool box and two spare tyres.
Can you self-drive a 4x4?
Yes, on the Prado, Fortuner and Hilux, with a licence held for two or more years and a refundable deposit. The Safari Land Cruiser comes with a driver-guide. For Akagera specifically, we recommend our own safari vehicle and guide rather than a self-drive car — the sightings and the tracks deserve it.
How to decide
Send us the route and the dates. If it is Kigali and the lake in the dry season, we will happily suggest the cheaper car. If it is the parks, or the rains, we will say Prado.
