Frequently asked questions about hiring a car in Rwanda
Booking
Is delivery really free anywhere in Rwanda?+
Yes — we deliver and collect the car anywhere in the country at no charge: the airport, your hotel, or as far as Karongi and Rubavu. The car arrives with a full tank.
What is included in the daily rate?+
Unlimited kilometres in-country, insurance, roadside support and a full tank at handover. Fuel on the road, park fees and permits are quoted separately.
How far in advance should I book?+
As soon as your dates are fixed. Cars are usually available at short notice, but gorilla permits and park lodges sell out in the dry seasons (June to September, December to February).
Do you offer monthly or long-term rates?+
Yes. Weekly and monthly hire comes at reduced rates for expatriates, consultants and projects, with servicing and a replacement vehicle handled by our own workshop.
Self-drive
Do I need an international driving permit to self-drive?+
A licence held for two or more years is required, plus a refundable $500 deposit. An international permit helps but a valid national licence in English or French is accepted. We fit a local SIM and offline maps before you leave.
Can I drive the car to Uganda or Tanzania?+
Yes, with cross-border papers arranged in advance for a small fee. Tell us the route when you book so the insurance and documents are in order.
Driver-guides
What does the driver-guide's day rate include?+
The $35 a day covers the driver-guide, their meals and their accommodation on the road. You do not arrange or pay for a driver's room at the lodge — we do.
Which languages do your driver-guides speak?+
English, French and Kinyarwanda. Tell us if you need another language and we will do our best.
Vehicles
Which car do you recommend for the parks?+
A Land Cruiser Prado for Volcanoes and Nyungwe, a pop-top Safari Land Cruiser with driver-guide for Akagera, and a RAV4 for Kigali, Lake Kivu and the tarmac routes. Families with bags usually take the seven-seat Fortuner.
Are child seats available?+
Yes — ask for a child seat when you book and we fit it before delivery. There is a small daily charge.
Airport transfers
What happens if my flight is delayed?+
Send us your flight number when you book. If the flight lands late, your driver waits at arrivals with the name board.
Can the airport transfer go straight up-country?+
Yes. Musanze, Akagera, Nyungwe and Lake Kivu are all reachable the same day from the airport. Tell us the lodge and we quote the drive with the same driver.
Safaris & tours
Can you arrange permits and lodges too?+
Yes. We book gorilla and chimp permits, park fees and lodges at the operator rate, so the car, the permit and the room arrive as one written quote.
Can I take a self-drive car into the national parks?+
Volcanoes, Nyungwe and Lake Kivu are fine for self-drive in any of our 4x4s. For Akagera game drives we provide our own safari Land Cruiser with a driver-guide, which is what the park tracks and the sightings deserve — ask us before planning a self-drive game drive.
Are permits and park fees included in tour prices?+
Tour prices are per person and include the permit or park fee, the vehicle with a driver-guide and the nights shown. Meals, tips and international flights are not included. We list every line on the written quote.
Insurance & support
What insurance is included, and what is the excess?+
Every rental includes comprehensive insurance and roadside support. The refundable $500 deposit covers the excess on self-drive hires and is returned when the car comes back as it left. Full terms are on our insurance and damage policy page.
What if the car breaks down on the road?+
Call or WhatsApp the office — we answer 6am to 10pm, seven days. Roadside support is included, and we arrange a replacement vehicle if the car cannot continue.
Payment
How do I pay, and how much to reserve?+
30% holds the vehicle and lets us buy permits the same day. Pay by card, mobile money or bank transfer. No payment is taken online through the site.
Send your dates. We'll answer the rest.
A written quote the same day — vehicle, driver, permits and lodges on one page.
