4x4 & safari vehicles

4x4 rental in Rwanda for the roads beyond the tarmac.

Rwanda is paved between towns and murram the moment you turn towards a park gate. Our 4x4s are chosen for exactly that: diesel Prados for the long routes, seven-seat Fortuners for families, Hilux pickups for field work, and pop-top safari Land Cruisers with a driver-guide for game drives.

When you actually need a 4x4.

Not for Kigali, Lake Kivu or the main roads between towns — those are tarmac and a RAV4 is enough. You want a 4x4 for the murram roads to the gorilla trailheads in Volcanoes, for the lodge tracks in Nyungwe, for the graded dirt inside Akagera, and for any park visit in the rainy months of March to May and October to November.

A Land Cruiser Prado covers almost every itinerary: diesel, automatic, a roof rack for luggage and enough clearance to shrug off mud. Families with bags take the seven-seat Fortuner. NGO and project teams take the Hilux double cab with its locking canopy and tow bar.

Safari vehicles for Akagera game drives.

For game drives we run pop-top Safari Land Cruisers: a roof that lifts so everyone can stand and photograph, a cool box for the long dawn drives, and two spare tyres because the eastern tracks earn them. They come with a driver-guide, and the rate covers the driver, their meals and their lodging.

Every 4x4 rate includes insurance, roadside support, unlimited kilometres in-country and a full tank. Self-drive is available on the Prado, Fortuner and Hilux with a licence held for two or more years and a refundable deposit.

Good to know

Good to know before you book

Do I need an international driving permit to self-drive?

A licence held for two or more years is required, plus a refundable $500 deposit. An international permit helps but a valid national licence in English or French is accepted. We fit a local SIM and offline maps before you leave.

Can you arrange permits and lodges too?

Yes. We book gorilla and chimp permits, park fees and lodges at the operator rate, so the car, the permit and the room arrive as one written quote.

Can I take a self-drive car into the national parks?

Volcanoes, Nyungwe and Lake Kivu are fine for self-drive in any of our 4x4s. For Akagera game drives we provide our own safari Land Cruiser with a driver-guide, which is what the park tracks and the sightings deserve — ask us before planning a self-drive game drive.

Which car do you recommend for the parks?

A Land Cruiser Prado for Volcanoes and Nyungwe, a pop-top Safari Land Cruiser with driver-guide for Akagera, and a RAV4 for Kigali, Lake Kivu and the tarmac routes. Families with bags usually take the seven-seat Fortuner.

Are child seats available?

Yes — ask for a child seat when you book and we fit it before delivery. There is a small daily charge.

Can I drive the car to Uganda or Tanzania?

Yes, with cross-border papers arranged in advance for a small fee. Tell us the route when you book so the insurance and documents are in order.

Are permits and park fees included in tour prices?

Tour prices are per person and include the permit or park fee, the vehicle with a driver-guide and the nights shown. Meals, tips and international flights are not included. We list every line on the written quote.
