Nyanza was the seat of the Rwandan monarchy, and the King's Palace is a faithful reconstruction of the traditional royal residence — a great thatched dome shaped like a beehive, built with the same methods the court used.
Why visit
For centuries the court moved between hills; when it finally settled, Nyanza became the capital, a town of more than two thousand people living in huts like these. The guided tour explains the palace's layout, the roles of the court and the oral history of the kingdom's battles and successions. Behind the palace graze the Inyambo, long-horned cattle descended from the royal herd, decorated for ceremonies and trained to follow their keepers' songs in procession. The monarchy ended at independence in 1962, but the Inyambo are still bred and cared for by the Rwanda Agriculture Board — a living piece of the old court.
Getting there
Nyanza is about two hours south of Kigali on the road to Huye and Nyungwe, which makes the palace the natural first stop on any southern itinerary. The Ethnographic Museum in Huye is a further thirty minutes and the two are best seen together.
Practical notes
Allow about an hour and a half with a guide. The site is on tarmac and any car in the fleet will do.
