Kigali Cultural Village

Kigali Cultural Village is a living showcase of Rwandan heritage just outside the capital, and the easiest cultural stop to fit into a short trip.

What you will see

The afternoon centres on performance: Intore dance, once reserved for the royal court, with its grass wigs, spears and spectacular high jumps, alongside drumming and song. Around the arena, artisans work at the crafts that still run through daily life — basket weaving, including the tightly coiled "peace baskets" given at weddings, pottery in the fine local clay, and wood carving — and visitors are invited to try. The village is built in traditional style, with thatched, beehive-shaped huts and courtyards that show how a homestead was laid out.

Guides tell Rwanda's story from the kingdom era through the colonial period to the modern nation, so the crafts and dances come with their meaning attached.

Getting there

The village is a short drive from any Kigali hotel and a natural half-day alongside the Genocide Memorial or Nyamirambo. It also works well as the gentle cultural afternoon in a family itinerary, before the long drives north or east.
